Dear DMS Family,

Learning is in full swing here at DMS as we are reaching the end of the first nine weeks. We have had a great start to the school year.  As the administration team visits classrooms, it is clear to see that the children have settled into their school routines. The staff is hard at work teaching, assessing, and analyzing student performance data to ensure student learning as well as establishing instructional goals and strategies. Focus areas include promoting student centered learning environments, differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners, incorporating formative assessments, and promoting critical thinking and problem solving. All staff members here at DMS collaborate to help all students access the curriculum so they are successful in their learning and social interactions.

If you have not signed up for Parent Portal to check your child’s grades, please do so by coming to the school and registering for an account.  Current grades are available for viewing on the Parent Portal and we would like to encourage all parents to regularly check your student’s progress, so that students and parents are able to monitor individual learning and make improvements or adjustments to study habits.

Please make every effort to have your child at school on time each day. Instructional time is lost when students are tardy. This effects the efficiency of the classroom as well as the office. Students are to be in class and seated at 7:50 AM. After 8:00, your student will be considered tardy.  At that point, parents dropping off students will have to park and come inside to sign your child into school.  We suggest that parents do not wait until the last minute prior to the 8:00 AM tardy bell, as the drop-off traffic may delay you. Students may be dropped off at Dillon Middle School as early as 7:00 AM.

A new collaborative effort among the Department of Counseling in the College of Heath Science at UNC Pembroke, Perdue Farms, the Walmart Foundation, and the C.E. Mendez Foundation will provide social and emotional learning opportunities for the students at Dillon Middle School for ten weeks.  We are truly excited become an educational partner with the Department of Counseling at UNCP as well as the opportunities that it will provide our students.  We believe helping our students build strong social skills is critical in influencing their academic performance, behavior, social and family relationships, and involvement in extracurricular activities. We admire these graduate students and their professors at UNCP for allowing Dillon Middle School to be a part of their project and appreciate all the time and hard work they are dedicating to prepare our students to be successful in life.

We could not accomplish all that we do without the support of our parents, families, and community members. We want each and every student to achieve success at Dillon Middle School, and we will support your student’s progress in any way possible.

If you have questions or comments, please contact us at 843-774-1212.

Sincerely,
Mr. Rodney Cook, Principal
Dr. Walter Jackson, Assistant Principal
